Counseling Services The relationship between client and counselor is the most important and most healing element in the therapeutic process. You and I will work together to help you understand more clearly what is happening in your life. You can begin to have more clarity about your own thoughts, behaviors, choices and motivations. I work with adolescents, adults, families. I see couples only when there has been a traumatic loss. You and I partner together to find the interventions that will work best for you and in your situation. Therapy services may include any or all the various modalities in my training including yoga, meditation, reiki, expressive arts, and the use of ritual. Learn more....

Yoga and Yoga Therapy I am certified Integral Yoga® teacher, a, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) and Continuing Education Provider (YACEP) with Yoga Alliance, as well as a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT), and member of the International Yoga Therapists Association (IYTA). In a yoga therapy, we talk about your needs and how the various branches and tools of yoga can help you meet your needs and goals. We may work on yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), meditation or other aspects of yoga including as appropriate yoga philosophy. We will explore how each of the tools of yoga are helping to support your needs and how the practice impacts each level of your being and experience in the moment and beyond including physically, energetically, mentally, intuitively and spiritually.
Meditation I can help you begin or deepen a meditation practice. I often teach meditation to my clients as part of therapy. Meditation is a time tested tool to help us learn to manage and move beyond the stress inducing thoughts of our minds to the peace of the present moment. A great deal of research has been done in the past two decades on the benefits of meditation and mindfulness practices. Meditation based techniques such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), based on the work of John Kabat-Zinn, and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapies (MBCT) have much research to support the immense and far reaching benefits of the practice. Study after study shows that anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, anger problems, and insomnia can be effectively treated with meditation mindfulness strategies. Other studies have shown increased immune function, the ability to have better focus and attention, reduction in experiences associated with traumatic stress including hypervigilance and hyper-arousal, and an increased sense of calm even when we are not meditation. The benefits are pervasive and cumulative. With meditation we can find relief from the immense stress of grief, a space of respite from the constant jumble of thoughts, the doubt, painful self-talk, incessant questioning, feelings of anger, deprivation, sadness, hopelessness, fear, longing, yearning and a sense of deep connectedness with All.
Reiki and Chakra Balancing Reiki is a Japanese hands-on technique used widely for stress reduction and relaxation as well as for energetic and spiritual healing. The Japanese word "rei" means Divine Power or Higher Wisdom and the word "ki" means life force energy. "Ki" is the same force as the yogic "prana," as well as "chi" or "Qi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Reiki involves the laying on of hands and movement of the therapist's hands in or through the client's energy field. Reiki can also be sent distantly. The reiki practitioner channels spiritually guided life force energy to help balance and heal the client's personal energy field. Our energetic field has direct impact and interaction with our physical and mental bodies. By helping to balance and heal any trauma in the energy field, we can directly affect the whole. I also use reiki and energy work to balance the energy of the chakra system and help you learn more about how your energetic system is working. We will work together to balance your energy and you can learn to do this for yourself as well. Learn More...
Hypnotherapy and Trance Work Hypnosis and trance are ways of gaining direct access to our subconscious minds and our imaginal realms where we can work with our inner selves in creative ways. Being in a state of hypnosis, or trance, is to allow the body to be in a deeply relaxed, peaceful state while remaining aware of what is happening. In this state of relaxed awareness, you can access insight and internal resources, let your conscious and subconscious minds work in tandem with your inner wisdom, your own deep knowing and your higher self, allowing for new ways of being in your life and in the world. What you discover in hypnosis and trance are answers that are all your own. Learn More...
Tarot Cards Tarot has been a tool for gathering insightful information about the Self for centuries. It is a card deck containing 78 cards divided into two categories called the Major and Minor Arcana, meaning "secrets or mysteries." The cards can be used in many ways for self development and understanding. The symbolism within the deck, and how we use it, can help us find clarity and better understand the terrain of own subconscious and the many layers of who we are. Learn more... Circles of the Self This creative, intuitive assessment tool is based on the ancient concept of the mandala blended with the work of Carl Jung, famed Swiss psychiatrist, and the collective cultural, mythical information he synthesized, resulting in what our culture now recognizes as the "collective unconscious." Through your own choices of universal symbols and individual colors, you provide for your own self a kind of map of awareness; a map that can show yourself where you are right now and where you might be headed. Retreats In a retreat space we can turn away from the demands and pressures of the world into a quieter space where we can re-connect, or perhaps connect for the first time, with our own feelings, experiences and needs in our grief. We can have time and space to connect with others walking this same path, with nature, and with our beloved dead. Taking time to intentionally focus on your experiences and needs in grief can help us strengthen our ability to hold the pain and to continue to travel this path. Retreat can be for a full day or up to 5 days long. Learn more about current retreat offerings here or contact me to schedule and create a sacred retreat especially for your group or for your family.

Professional Training Offering professional training in grief and traumatic grief, teaching other professionals how to work with this vulnerable population is one of the most important things in my work life. The need for trained therapists and other mental health providers, medical staff, birth attendants, first responders, clergy, yoga teachers, and all manner of support people for those in traumatic grief is crucial. Providers need to understand more about how trauma impacts the body and brain, how grief effects every layer of being--physical, mental, emotional, cognitive, spiritual--and how to companion and support the traumatically bereaved all along the grief journey.
Supervision, Consultation & Mentorship for Professionals (therapists, yoga teachers & therapists, doulas, hospice and palliative care, ICU/PICU, funeral workers, clergy, first responders) Those who have been through the darkest nights of the soul, those who have lived through the deaths of their most beloveds, need compassion, support and professionals who are well trained and who understand the physical, emotional, energetic, mental, and spiritual impact of traumatic grief. As a professional working with those in traumatic grief you may find you have need for support, consultation or supervision. I'm honored to provide a safe and confidential space for you to discuss and reflect on your work.
I have worked with hundreds of individuals and families in traumatic grief for over a decade and feel strongly about supporting other professionals in their own growth as they support individuals and families in traumatic bereavement. Seeking out consultation and supervision in this area can support your growth professionally and personally, and help you potentially avoid vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout. It can also help you serve those who are traumatically bereaved far better.
For therapists and counseling residents in Virginia, I am an approved supervisor toward LPC licensure. For therapists, counselors, yoga therapists and teachers, including those certified as Compassionate Bereavement Care(CBC) Providers and Yoga Providers (CBC-Y), I am available for consultation and mentorship.
