"Love is the sacred bridge that connects us all."
~Karla Helbert

Sacred Bridge

A 12-week guided journey...

for grieving people longing to continue growing relationship
with their beloved dead
as they discover who they are becoming through grief.

~Welcome.
If you've found your way here, it's likely that someone you love has died. For that, I am truly sorry. Sorry that you are going through this heartbreak and pain. I know what it's like. The longing, the missing, the sense of disblief and the deep unfairness inherent in having someone you love so much taken from your life here on this physical plane.

In the midst of your grief and heartache, you likely have realized that your love doesn't end, and neither does your realtionship. Sacred Bridge is not a grief program designed to help you "get over" your loss, or have you move through presecibed stages to an arbitratry finish line called 'healing.'

This is a different kind of journey. One that honors both the pain of traumatic grief and the enduring love that continues after death.

Grief is not pathology. Grief is a normal and a natural response to the loss of something precious. Sometimes the most precious thing in your life.

Grief is also love.

Love continues. Just as relationship continues. And as relationship continues, it can also continue to grow.

If you are longing not only for compassionate, grounded support in your grief, but also for a way to continue growing your relationship with the person you love, Sacred Bridge was created for you.

Picture

You may recognize yourself...

If you have come to realize that surviving grief is not the same as growing through and with it.

You know your love has not ended, and you know your relationship with the person who died has not ended either. You may not be certain about how to nurture that relationship or where to turn for guidance that feels both grounded and compassionate.

Perhaps you've become spiritually curious, while remaining thoughtful and discerning. You may have had dreams, signs, or moments of connection that have left you wondering what they mean. You may often hesitate to share them for fear of being misunderstood, uncertain how others may respond.

You may also recognize that the trauma of your loss—the anxiety, the stress, the constant vigilance, the sense that your nervous system is always on guard—all things that often follow profound loss, can make it difficult to feel settled, peaceful, or open. Perhaps you have wondered if it's possible to experience grounded, trauma-responsive support that honors both the reality of your profound grief and also the enduring nature of your profound love, helping you connect with greater meaning, connection, and the love that is always there.

If this sounds like you, you are not alone.

How the Journey Works...

Sacred Bridge is a twelve-week guided journey that meets live on Zoom in a small, supportive group of no more than 12. Each weekly gathering includes teaching, discussion, experiential practices, and time for reflection and questions.

Throughout our time together, you'll engage with contemplative practices, meditation, yoga nidra, guided inner journeys, journaling, and other experiential exercises that support both your own learning and growth as well as the continued development of your relationship with your beloved.

You'll receive recordings of our sessions and guided practices you can return to between meetings, as well as access to resources that support your learning throughout the journey.

While every week builds upon the one before it, there is no expectation that you "perform" or have extraordinary experiences. You're encouraged to move at your own pace, with curiosity, compassion, and respect for your own process.

Because this is a live, interactive experience, there will be opportunities to ask questions, share reflections (if you wish), and learn alongside others who understand.

What we'll explore together...

Over twelve weeks, we will explore practices and perspectives that support both your own growth as you move through grief and the continued development of your relationship with your beloved.

Together we will practice:
  • Creating safety and receptivity through nervous system regulation, meditation, guided relaxation, and other contemplative practices.
  • Understanding grief as love, learning to related to grief not as the enemy, but as an expression of love
  • Recognizing and working gently with interference, including trauma, fear, limiting beliefs, mental chatter, self-doubt, and messages that no longer serve you.
  • Connecting more deeply with the soul of your beloved through guided inner journeys, meditation, and practices that cultivate loving awareness.
  • Exploring the intuitive senses in grounded, practical ways, learning to recognize and trust your own natural ways of perceiving connection.
  • Working with signs, dreams, symbols, and meaningful experiences with curiosity, discernment, and openness.
  • Cultivating a living, growing relationship through ritual, creativity, journaling, conversation, and everyday practices that nurture continuing love and connection.
  • Discovering who you are becoming as grief transforms your life, your identity, and your understanding of love.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is exactly is sacred bridge?
Sacred Bridge is a 12-week group journey for grieving people who want not only support in their grief, but who feel the importance of maintaining a relationship with the ones they love who have died. Blending trauma-informed grief support with contemplative practice, experiential learning, nervous system regulation, and spiritual exploration, Sacred Bridge offers a grounded and compassionate path toward healing trauma, integrating grief, exploring meaning, and growing enduring relationships with those we love who have died. It is based on the belief that love is the sacred bridge that continues to connect us, even beyond physical death.
Why did you create Sacred Bridge?
This group is based on my belief that love is eternal and is also the strongest force in the universe. It is that sacred bridge between us, even after death, that keeps us connected to those most precious to us. Sacred Bridge is meant to support people in healing from trauma, integrating grief, and becoming empowered to connect to their loved ones and to continue to grow those connections in active, living, and creative relationship for the rest of their lives.

The seed that grew into Sacred Bridge came initially from my own realization shortly after the death of my son Theo in 2006 that we have two tasks as bereaved people. One is figuring out how to have a relationship with someone who is not here on this physical plane. The other is figuring out who we are now that this has happened. These are tasks I have been occupied with ever since the moment he died.
How is Sacred Bridge different from a grief support group?
Sacred Bridge is different in both scope and intention from a general grief support group—which can be extremely helpful and supportive and I highly recommend support groups in grief. Sacred Bridge is different in that it is a carefully guided 12-week experiential container focused specifically on nervous system and trauma-responsive support that helps grieving people shift into states of calm and receptivity, to begin to see grief not as an enemy, but a companion, and to provide support specifically with the intention of helping members develop personal ways of relating to, connecting with, and growing active, ongoing relationships with loved ones who have died.

The curriculum draws from my background as a licensed therapist, yoga therapist, grief educator, meditation teacher, and trauma practitioner—as well as my lived experience with traumatic grief and my own learning around developing relationship with my loved ones who have died. The work integrates nervous system and somatic practices, experiential and creative practices, reflection, guided journeys, and relational processes, as well as support and education, in a way that is much more intensive and specialized than general grief support groups are designed to provide.

Is this Therapy?
This is not therapy or a therapy group. The curriculum draws from my background as a licensed therapist, yoga therapist, grief educator, meditation teacher, and trauma practitioner—as well as my lived experience with traumatic grief. The work integrates nervous system and somatic practices, experiential and creative practices, reflection, guided journeys, and relational processes, as well as support and education. It is therapeutic for sure, but not therapy in the traditional sense.
Does it matter when my loss happened?
In order to receive the most benefit from Sacred Bridge, I feel that it is helpful to be at least a year post loss. Conversely, it is also fine if it has been many years since the loss. There are always exceptions, and this is why I like to speak to each person before they enroll in the journey.

Primarily though, when we initially experience profound loss and the grief that follows, and often the trauma that can accompany the death of a deeply loved person, the brain and body undergo a great deal of psychological, emotional, mental, and often physical shock. Our system needs a natural space to adjust to this extreme change in what has been our life thus far.

Additionally, for quite some time, newly bereaved people walk around in a near constant state of non-ordinary consciousness. We are not “really here.” We are constantly searching for the one who has been lost. Some of this is our brain trying to figure out how and why something so dependable, so normal a part of our cognitive map of our own reality is suddenly gone. It takes a while to adjust (how long a while is, is very subjective and unique to each person.) Some of this is a spiritual issue, our own spirits are searching and seeking theirs, so lately here with us, and now…someplace else…somewhere we cannot go. We are in a liminal space—not really here, and not where they are either. This is one of the reasons a lot of newly bereaved people seem to have a lot more naturally occurring extraordinary experiences, including signs, visitations, dreams, and more. It is helpful for a person to move through these early days at their own pace.

This is not to say that one year is a magical date, either. Many traumatically bereaved people (I was/am one of them) would agree that two or three or even four years post loss, we are nowhere near “adjusted.” That said, I do think that having a period of individual adaptation to the world after the death of a beloved person is helpful. If you have a question about time, wherever you are in your grief journey, I would be glad to have a conversation.
Can I participate if I'm already working with a therapist?
Yes. While this group is grounded in therapeutic and trauma-responsive care, and I am a licensed therapist, this is not a therapy group. I am not in the role of therapist in Sacred Bridge, but rather facilitator, teacher, support, and coach. I would love however, for you to talk with your therapist about the group and share with them what we will be working on.
What if I become emotionally overwhelmed?
It is okay to feel strong emotion or to cry. If you feel overwhelmed, it is okay to take a break anytime. Hopefully, the skills you will learn in the early weeks of meeting to support your ability to calm the nervous system, to be embodied (rather than dissociated), to move through emotions, will help with this, not only in group, but in life.
Will this make my grief worse?
While I cannot predict every single person's response to any kind of intervention or program, I believe that actively working on ways to be more comfortable in your body through working with your nervous system, integrating and developing a healthier relationship with grief, engaging in connection with others, and with the active sense of ongoing attachment and love of those you are missing are all healthy pursuits. The concepts and practices explored in Sacred Bridge are informed by contemporary grief models including continuing bonds theory, as well as attachment theory, and current trauma research, nervous system science, with the addition of contemplative practices, and decades of clinical experience supporting bereaved individuals and families. There may be tears, sadness, longing--all these are natural parts of being human in grief. My hope is that over the course of our time together, you'll learn ways to feel regulated, calm, and connected and that grief begins to feel less like the enemy and more like simply a state of being human that coexists with love, meaning, peace, and continued relationship.
What if my trauma or anxiety makes it difficult to connect?
The beginning weeks of our group will focus on this very thing. Something that makes this group different is that it is a psychotherapeutically and trauma-informed program that addresses real needs of a bereaved, and often-traumatically bereaved, person through education and support around the ways trauma (of the loss, of the death, of the sense of having been cut off from a beloved person) impacts the body, mind, and spirit. In community, you will learn ways of calming the nervous system, safe ways of being embodied, and understanding ways of moving through life with grief, and with intention. In learning how to turn toward grief, allow the energy of traumatic experiences to move and integrate, we can allow love to flow more easily and learn to cultivate the open and receptive spaces where connection can naturally happen.
Can anyone learn to cultivate relationship with someone who has died?
The same way that we can decide when we are living, and they are living, to cultivate or deepen a relationship, we can do these things after someone has died. The love is always there, even if they are not here in their body, and it is love that is the bridge between us. If the intention is to cultivate a relationship, and the love is there, it can be done.
What if I am afraid of "doing it wrong"?
You can’t really “do it wrong.” Just as every single relationship with living people is different, has ebbs and flows, changes over time, so do our relationships with our beloved dead. There is no single right way to experience connection. Sacred Bridge is not about achieving a particular outcome or having dramatic experiences. It is about creating the conditions in which love, relationship, and your own natural ways of growing in that relationship, unfold on their own, between you and the ones you love.
What if I have never had a sign, a visitation dream, or a spiritual experience?
This is totally okay. All we really need to be is curious, open to possibility, and certain of love. I also think that a lot of bereaved people who have not had a sign or what they consider a spiritual experience is often the result of the near-constant state of stress that grief, particularly traumatic grief, brings. It can be very difficult to be in the state of openness and receptivity that seems to be generally required for a naturally arising spiritual experience to occur when we are extremely stressed. We will work on reducing stress, increasing calm, and shifting the nervous system into a place where these natural states of receptivity are more likely.
What if I have had experiences but i've been afraid to talk about them?
This will be a safe space for discussion and sharing of all kinds of experiences including after death communication, signs, visitations, experiences based in our extra-sensory perception and the faculties associated with these. You are welcome to share if you like.
What if I am skeptical?
It’s totally fine to be skeptical. I often say that I believe in almost everything and I’m also skeptical of quite a lot. Being truly skeptical also means being curious and open to possibility and those are two things I am hoping for in all Sacred Bridge members.
Do I have to believe in an afterlife?
No. I don't believe someone has to hold a particular belief about the afterlife in order to experience love, connection, or relationship with someone who has died. Sacred Bridge invites exploration, curiosity, and personal experience rather than asking you to adopt any particular belief system, or any belief system at all.
My religion taught that communicating with the dead is wrong. Does Sacred bridge try to change my beliefs?
Many people have been taught that trying to communicate with someone who has died is spiritually dangerous or wrong. Others come from traditions that encourage continuing relationship with ancestors and loved ones. Sacred Bridge is not about asking you to abandon your beliefs or adopt any other beliefs. Instead, this space is about thoughtful exploration, discernment, and your own direct, personal experience.

Throughout history and across many cultures, people have maintained relationships with those who have died through prayer, dreams, ritual, remembrance, conversation, or simply a sense of continuing presence. Human beings have attempted to connect with those we love who have died for centuries--in many different forms and ways. My personal belief  is that love itself is the strongest force in the universe and it is the bridge that connects us eternally, Because of this relationships grounded in love need not end with physical death. I encourage every participant to honor their own conscience, beliefs, and spiritual path as they explore these ideas.

Do you believe in mediums?
Yes. I believe that there are many people who can establish connection with those who have died and who can share messages from those people with those who are living. Many people can do this.

Sacred Bridge grew not only from my realization of the necessity of continuing relationship with our loved ones who have died, but also from my experience with traumatically bereaved clients who overwhelmingly seek connection with those they love who have died. They frequently feel they are unable to do so on their own, or they want outside validation, and often seek out support from mediums. Unfortunately, I also know that people can often be harmed by spiritually unethical or insensitive practitioners who may not always have the best interests of grieving people at heart r who may have no training in supporting people who have experienced traumatic loss. Some mediums, psychics, energy workers are incredibly compassionate and helpful, but all are not. Sacred Bridge is also meant to empower bereaved people to understand that they themselves can make these connections and grow their own dynamic relationships that can continue for the rest of our lives.

Will this teach me to be a medium?
No. Sacred Bridge is not mediumship training or development. While we explore intuition, extraordinary experiences, our extrasensory faculties, and the many ways relationship can continue, the focus of this group is on helping you connect with your own loved ones and to cultivate your own relationship with them, not to connect with the loved ones of others, which is what mediums do.

How is sacred bridge different from seeing a medium or a mediumship course?
A medium is someone who connects with your loved one using your existing love and relationship as the bridge to that person, and them to you. There are many wonderful mediums out there who can share their ability. Nearly all mediums agree that the reason they can connect is because of the existing love between you and your loved ones in spirit and that you have that ability all on your own. This group is meant to help you grow that innate human ability and to develop your own relationship with your loved ones.
Are you a medium?
I am not a professional medium. Through my journey early on as a deeply curious human and later also as bereaved mother, a bereaved daughter, bereaved granddaughter, bereaved friend, niece, cousin, I have explored many corners of the metaphysical. When I prepared to first write the book Sacred Bridge I undertook mediumship training. In that process I learned that I am a medium, which was as much a surprise to me as anyone! I already knew for sure that I have the ability, and always did, to connect to my son, my father, my friend, any person I knew and loved across the vast space between where we are here in this physical world and the place where they reside now in spirit. I did not know that I would be able to connect with the loved ones of others. I am a medium, but I do not practice mediumship professionally and have no plans to do so. Primarily, I am a psychotherapist, a grief support guide, facilitator, and a teacher--and a perpetually bereaved person who wants to always remain connected to those I love and miss through the constant, sacred connection of our love.
