Create Your Inner Sanctuary

Guided Meditation to Create Your Inner Sanctuary

Build Your Inner Sanctuary, Excerpt from The Chakras in Grief and Trauma
Chapter 6, The Sixth Chakra, Ajna Chakra, The Third Eye

A sanctuary is a safe space. Your inner sanctuary is a space inside your mind that you create using your imagination. It can look any way you want it to. It can contain anything you desire or imagine. It is a space in which you can imagine yourself meditating, praying, resting, creating and performing your own rituals, reading, doing art, visiting with guides, or anything else you might do in a place of safety and spiritual power. I recommend it actually be a room and if you want to create an outside space to go with it—a pristine beach, a forest clearing, a crystal cave—you certainly can.
Your inner sanctuary is an energetic space which you design, build and decorate using the powers of Ajna. It is a place where you can go for refuge; your own internal haven. It is also a place where you can do inner work, energy work for yourself, chakra balancing, magic, healing, visualization, anything that you want to do that takes place first on the metaphysical and imaginal planes. Your inner sanctuary is the place where those things occur. Try not to think of it as “imaginary” but as a real place that exists on an energetic plane. Just because something is metaphysical doesn’t mean it isn’t real. You will be able to do real work inside that energetic space.
Your space can look any way you like. It might be a room you are already familiar with, or one completely, newly created. Bring in furniture, décor, art, books, objects of curiosity or beauty, plants, flowers, cushions, candles, crystals, stones, anything at all that you like or want in the space. You might include a kitchen where you can bake cakes or prepare wildly creative meals. You might want a bathtub that looks out on a glorious vista. Your sanctuary might be a cabin on top of a mountain or a cottage in the deep forest, on a tropical island looking out onto sandy beaches and sparkling water, or a lavishly appointed room in an underground cavern. It can be as large or small as you like. Over time you might add rooms, change the décor, move things around. You may find your space changes things on its own, without your effort. Know that any changes that do occur are also from your vital imaginal space.
Whatever it looks like and wherever it is, give as much detail as you can to the space. Fill it with things which bring a sense of peace and contentment. Use your senses as you visualize and build your sanctuary—imagine the colors, textures, smells, sounds, even the tastes of the space. When you do your meditation, visualizations, chanting, yoga, and chakra balancing practices do them inside your sanctuary. As you are in the physical world doing these things, imagine being also in your inner sanctuary doing them as well.
You might want to write a description of your sanctuary, adding to it as you change and expand it. Note in your journal any spontaneous changes or additions that occur in the space as well as keep track of the energy work that you might do inside the space. You can create a collage of images that you imagine inside the space, pictures of the environment around your sanctuary, paint or draw it. You can also make a recording of yourself describing in detail what it looks like and then close your eyes and listen to the recording as you allow your imagination to construct.
To create your room, imagine you could shrink yourself down small enough to fit inside your own head and then place yourself in the room. The floor will be about where the bottom of the inside of your mouth is--under your tongue--and the ceiling just above the third eye--about where your hairline is. Don't take it all the way to the crown--you might imagine the crown as a kind of skylight. If you are in there and facing toward your eye sockets, they will be like windows. Mine are now doorways leading out to a wide veranda where I can see the ocean and also the mountains of my child hood.
